Living Steel

Summary
"Ordinary people, extraordinary stories. Step into the shoes of South Yorkshires' steel workers." Interactive kiosks and large screens deliver the message of what it was like to work within South Yorkshires’ steel industry.
Project Aims
Magna Science Adventure Centre invited DESQ to develop resources from a collection of their archive material. The brief was to create a living, breathing, interactive exhibition that could be enjoyed by all visitors to Magna.
What we did
'Living Steel' invites you to step into the shoes of steel workers. Using oral histories from people who worked in South Yorkshires' steel industry, coupled with photographs and animated text, the materials vividly retell the steel workers' interesting, and often humorous, stories of their working lives.
'Clocking on' explores the danger of working in the steel industry while 'Clocking off' demonstrates that it’s the after hours tales that really brings the story of steel to life.
There's also a game that runs within the materials to encourage visitors to interact with the exhibition and also provides a fun way to learn about steel industry related terminology.
Opened in February 2006, the Living Steel interactive exhibition is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and can be found on the first floor walkway of the Magna building.
Feedback
“DESQ added great new ideas and moved the project in new directions. They managed the creative partnership with skill, involving us at all stages, listening to our suggestions and targeting the core aims of the project. On time, on budget and a great success."
